Artwork in the room
Rasa Makaraitytė Ra is a rising Lithuanian artist who currently lives in Rome. She started her creative path by studying architecture at the Vilnius Academy of Arts in Lithuania, but later redirected her focus toward visual arts. Now residing in Italy, Rasa works across multiple creative fields, such as graphic design, photography, video art, illustration, and painting.
The breadth and richness of her multidisciplinary experience can be seen throughout her body of work. Rasa employs diverse techniques to transform fleeting memories into striking images, expressing emotions like crisis, triumph, momentum, and longing. Her unique approach is marked by vibrant colors, energetic brushwork, and a strong black outline that unifies and frames each piece.
Rasa's method is deliberately open, favoring suggestion and quiet over direct storytelling. By avoiding a fixed narrative or personal anecdote, she invites viewers to immerse themselves and interpret her pieces through their own viewpoints. This openness grants her art a flexibility and interpretive freedom that allows it to connect with and speak to a broad audience.
Her works have been featured in various exhibitions, most notably "Da Lontano a Qui" (2018) at Spazio E - Arte Contemporanea in Milan, and "Da Lontano a Qui Vol. 2" (2018) at MUEF ArtGallery in Rome. Through these shows, Rasa Makaraitytė Ra has started to make her mark in both the Lithuanian and Italian contemporary art worlds.
About this artwork+
The painting features a striking figure, conveying intense emotion and vivid coloration. A prominent, deep blue jacket cloaks the subject, whose arm is raised in a dramatic pose, cradling a bright red telephone receiver that hangs disconnectedly by a white cord. The figure’s face is painted with a palette of blue, setting a stark contrast against the bold red lips and a heavy-lidded, piercing gaze. A splash of vivid yellow forms the hair, swept back as if caught in a sudden gust or in the motion of the pose. The background is a flat, unembellished pink, focusing all attention on the central character. The overall composition is daring and expressive, filled with a sense of narrative intrigue and emotional depth, typical of expressionist art.
