Rasa Makaraitytė Ra is a rising Lithuanian artist who currently lives in Rome. She started her creative path by studying architecture at the Vilnius Academy of Arts in Lithuania, but later redirected her focus toward visual arts. Now residing in Italy, Rasa works across multiple creative fields, such as graphic design, photography, video art, illustration, and painting.
The breadth and richness of her multidisciplinary experience can be seen throughout her body of work. Rasa employs diverse techniques to transform fleeting memories into striking images, expressing emotions like crisis, triumph, momentum, and longing. Her unique approach is marked by vibrant colors, energetic brushwork, and a strong black outline that unifies and frames each piece.
Rasa's method is deliberately open, favoring suggestion and quiet over direct storytelling. By avoiding a fixed narrative or personal anecdote, she invites viewers to immerse themselves and interpret her pieces through their own viewpoints. This openness grants her art a flexibility and interpretive freedom that allows it to connect with and speak to a broad audience.
Her works have been featured in various exhibitions, most notably "Da Lontano a Qui" (2018) at Spazio E - Arte Contemporanea in Milan, and "Da Lontano a Qui Vol. 2" (2018) at MUEF ArtGallery in Rome. Through these shows, Rasa Makaraitytė Ra has started to make her mark in both the Lithuanian and Italian contemporary art worlds.
About this artwork+
In the vibrant and expressive painting, "Baby Blue No. 3," a blue woman with a serenely abstracted facial expression takes center stage. She is depicted in a seated, almost contorted pose, where her limbs gracefully intertwine. Her skin is a rich azure, starkly contrasted against the lively strokes of pink, green, white, and hints of yellow of the background. Sprays and patches of these colors form a dynamic backdrop. Notably, her eyes are hidden behind graphical representations of clouds and a red orb, giving her a mystical and enigmatic aura. Adorning her hair is a pink flower, adding a delicate touch to the bold palette of colors. Her lips are pursed in a thoughtful, quiet demeanor, while her hands gesture gently towards her face, enhancing her contemplative gaze. The foreground and her surroundings are lightly sketched, suggesting elements of a landscape or interior, subtly allowing her figure to dominate the visual narrative with its vivid and surreal presence.
