Vidmantas Zarėka, born in 1962 in Panevėžys, Lithuania, is an artist and educator.

Rooted in academic training, Vidmantas Zarėka demonstrates a strong command of form and composition, yet his practice remains open and exploratory. Moving fluidly between techniques, scales, and motifs, he is driven by curiosity and a willingness to experiment. His works often begin in recognizable reality, gradually loosening into more open, atmospheric compositions. While earlier works leaned toward storytelling, his recent practice shifts away from fixed narratives.

Rather than offering answers, Zarėka creates space for the viewer to question what is seen, why it appears, and how the image takes shape. Through a confident handling of technique, he subtly plays with the viewer’s gaze and first impressions may shift on closer looking, as forms reveal themselves differently over time.

The work becomes a dialogue, where perception is active and meaning is not given, but discovered.

Layered surfaces and restrained color further slow the viewing process, encouraging a more attentive, unhurried way of looking. “I strive to balance chaos and pure aesthetics — guided by my inner barometer.”

About this artwork+

The painting features an abstract, layered composition that invokes a dreamlike landscape. The primary elements resemble stylized, geometric flowers, characterized by sharp points and vibrant textures, possibly suggesting a nocturnal scene under a muted sky. Various segments of the plants show an array of patterns and textures, with colors merging into each other—browns, blues, reds, and greens. Subtle outlines traced with what looks like thread or string add a three-dimensional aspect and textural contrast. There are rain-like vertical streaks overlaying the scene, set against a subdued background of blue tones resembling both sky and water, enhancing the feel of a mysterious, dimly lit environment.
