Mantas Daujotas (b. 1993) is a painter and musician from Kaunas, Lithuania. Since obtaining his Bachelor's degree in Painting in 2017, Daujotas has gained recognition as a vibrant and promising young artist. He has presented several solo exhibitions and taken part in numerous group shows, which attest to his increasing prominence in the contemporary art world.
Daujotas's work encompasses a wide range of subjects, including empty buildings, abandoned streets, and even atypical figures like an albino crocodile. Despite this breadth, his paintings consistently convey a sense of emptiness and weighty silence. This mood subtly mirrors an inner anxiety—an emotion that resonates with many people today.
Within Daujotas’s artwork, time seems to come to a halt, rendering his subjects motionless within uncertain settings. The dreamlike, immobilized spaces he creates explore themes of isolation, solitude, and existential unease. Through the stillness and palpable tension, viewers are prompted to consider their own emotions in the context of contemporary existence.
Daujotas explains that his intention is not to portray dramatic incidents or attention-seeking moments, but rather to draw focus to what is missing. He underscores that it is ‘life’ itself that inhabits his vacant interiors, embodying the spectrum of human emotion and the intricacies of relationships. For Daujotas, the solitude expressed in his paintings does not signify mere sadness, but rather a complex kind of unity and belonging with one’s surroundings.
About this artwork+
The painting presents a tranquil rural landscape dominated by a series of barn-like structures painted in vibrant red. These buildings stand under a vast, moody sky filled with grey clouds conveying a hint of an impending storm or the end of one. The foreground is covered by an expansive, lush green field that sets a stark contrast with the red of the buildings. On the horizon, occasional trees punctuate the skyline, suggesting a nearby woodland or scattered groves. The atmosphere is quiet and somewhat somber, evoking a feeling of isolation or serene detachment from the bustling outside world.
