Živilė Butvilaitė is an artist who utilizes the technique known as "photography without a camera," with a particular focus on the creation of chemigrams. In her artistic process, she forgoes the conventional paintbrush or camera in favor of a singular blend of light, photosensitive materials, chemicals, and household items like dishwashing detergent and oil. Through these means, she investigates the limits of photographic art, generating images entirely free from digital influence.

Butvilaitė’s method centers on experimentation—she pays close attention to the intriguing chemical reactions that unfold across her artistic surfaces. She draws a parallel between these processes and the chemical responses in the human brain, which constantly affect and redefine our emotions. The images she produces are capable of expressing a wide range of moods, from serene calm to dynamic chaos, at times immersing viewers in imagined, technology-free realms populated by distinctive characters.

Her body of work reflects a desire for direct, tactile experimentation at a time when digital workflows are becoming ever more prevalent. By opting for analog processes, Živilė Butvilaitė underscores the creative opportunities that remain outside the boundaries of digital technology, reminding us of the lasting appeal and unpredictability found in traditional approaches.

Based in Vilnius, Lithuania, Živilė Butvilaitė continues to advance her creative pursuits while studying photography at Vilnius College of Design, where she is specializing in Applied Photography. Both her ongoing education and artistic practice play key roles in shaping her continually developing vision.

About this artwork+

The painting features an abstract composition consisting of clustered, irregularly shaped cells that resemble bubbles or organic formations. These forms are rendered in white against a monochromatic golden-brown background. The texture within the cells varies, with some appearing smooth and others showing intricate details of smaller shapes and specks, suggesting depth and complexity. The tone and contrast of white against the darker background create an effect that is both striking and harmonious, capturing a sense of natural randomness and beauty. Light splatters and flecks around the edges of the main forms suggest movement or an explosive moment captured in time.
