Viktor Reznik, a Ukrainian artist, now resides and works in Germany. This move has enabled him to discover new settings and enrich his art with influences from both his native country and his adopted home. The interplay of these cultures is essential to the distinctive atmosphere present throughout his creations.

The sky and water are central motifs in Viktor's work. Their boundless blue expanses and ever-shifting forms fascinate him. These elemental subjects shape the stories within his paintings, giving him a way to delve into ideas such as infinity, transformation, and the shifting dance of light and colour.

Reznik’s artwork stands out for its remarkable depth of space, accomplished through his skilful use of varying blue hues. By depicting the fluid connections among sky, water, and the urban landscape, he crafts scenes that immerse the viewer in vivid points of time and place. His distinctive style frequently dissolves the line between what is real and what is perceived, lending each painting a sense of immediacy and timelessness.

His method is especially compelling in his portrayals of boats, sails, and intricately rendered houses placed before sweeping backgrounds. Viktor’s brushstrokes range from fine and pencil-like to bold and commanding, enhancing the reflection of light on water and the liveliness of city waterfronts. The majority of his work was painted in Hamburg and represents actual sites, providing those who know the city with a genuine sense of connection.

About this artwork+

The painting captures a bustling river scene, vividly portraying a mix of classic and modern maritime life. Dominating the left side of the artwork is a grand sailing ship with towering masts and billowed sails, rich in detail, moving gracefully on the water. Alongside, and contrasting with, the ancient mariner’s vessel are more contemporary boats, including a tug and other motorized ships, quietly underscoring the evolution of naval technology. The river itself is lively, dotted with numerous smaller sailboats that add a dynamic flair to the scene. In the background, the softened outlines of a city emerge, possibly hinting at a harmonious blend of history and modernity that mirrors the vessels in the foreground. The sky above is a whirl of blues and whites, suggesting a breezy yet bright day, casting uneven, softly gilded light upon the water and contributing to an overall feeling of vibrant movement. This lively interaction of elements and eras evokes the sense of a celebratory parade on the water.
