His body of work is particularly distinguished by its representation of water—whether depicted as the gentle current of a woodland stream or the animated movement of a lagoon. Varnas paints from life and expertly portrays the shifting, reflective surfaces, giving each painting a unique ambiance through his refined technique. The nuanced interplay of light, combined with his dynamic brushstrokes, brings his canvases to life, capturing the immediacy and liveliness of nature’s fleeting beauty.

About this artwork+
This painting by Valentinas Varnas, titled "Before the Storm," depicts a vivid and dynamic landscape scene. In the foreground, there is a large, lush tree with dense foliage standing prominently against a dramatically changing sky. Below the tree, the ground is bright with patches of yellow, suggesting a grassy field. The sky is a striking element, painted with heavy, textured strokes of white, blue, and hints of pink. This mix of colors suggests the gathering tension of an approaching storm. On the right, darker shades start to overtake the lighter tones, adding a sense of impending change. Varnas uses a thick, impasto technique, where the paint is laid on the canvas in heavy layers. This gives the painting a tactile quality, making the scene feel alive and dynamic. The brushwork is loose and expressive, which enhances the sense of movement and emotion in the piece. Valentinas Varnas's style in this painting is characterized by bold colors, dynamic contrasts, and a palpable sense of atmosphere, effectively capturing the moments before a storm.
