Simas Šuminskas is an artist whose creative path has been profoundly influenced by several years of solo backpacking throughout Central Asia. These travels presented him with a multitude of experiences that significantly shaped both his perspective and artistic approach. From the age of 11, he became acquainted with the idea of being an “insider,” a notion that has since remained instrumental in his exploration of identity and belonging, continually resurfacing as a central motif in his artistic work. For Simas, art serves not only as an outlet for self-expression but also as a dedicated arena for sharing the intricate facets of his journey.
From early childhood, drawing has played an integral role in Simas' life, as he has always found himself with a pencil in hand. He characterizes his art as heavily symbolic, inviting viewers to seek out the deeper meanings interwoven throughout his creations. Simas maintains that, for those willing to carefully observe and invest attention, his pieces unveil concealed narratives and form new, unique connections with each audience member. This level of interaction, he believes, is essential for fully understanding the message within his work.
Simas fosters a visual language that is both lively and continually evolving, purposefully steering clear of repetition. He sees unpredictability and transformation as inherent to life itself and strives to mirror this reality in his art by never allowing his style to become stagnant. Such a perspective urges viewers to stay open-minded and adaptable, reflecting the fluid nature of everyday life.
His artistic portfolio distinguishes itself through its philosophical richness, minimalist sophistication, and, on occasion, an unrefined rawness. Despite any starkness or rugged qualities, Simas remains convinced that beauty and solace can invariably be found by anyone who approaches his art with the right outlook. He aims, through his creative work, to remind people of the individuality found in their own lives and experiences, and to highlight the significance of valuing the remarkable within the ordinary.
About this artwork+
In the painting, a densely packed scene filled with dynamic, directional elements captures the viewer’s attention. The setting appears to be a rugged coastal landscape with dark water and angular, fragmented cliffs. A central figure, positioned in the foreground, leans over the water’s edge with a pensive or introspective demeanor. This figure, partially in silhouette, merges stylistically with the surroundings, its form outlined yet almost an extension of the rock formations beneath it. The sky is dominated by a torrent of birds sweeping across it, their movement from left to right, suggesting a mass migration or chaotic flight. Below them, in the lower part of the artwork, light beams erupt from a point behind the horizon, piercing through the water and sky, scattering into sharp, knife-like shards. These beams create a stark contrast with the darker tones of the majority of the painting. Reflecting the interplay between air and water, birds appear not just airborne but also duplicated or mirrored into the water, as if they are also aquatic creatures, blurring the distinctions between the elements they inhabit. The overall composition, marked by its intense, almost palpable energy, conveys a moment of profound interaction or convergence, summoning a sense of mystery or impending revelation.
