Šarūnas Šarkauskas, born in 1967 in Kaunas, began developing his artistic abilities at a local four-year art school. Although his subsequent efforts to obtain a formal art education were unsuccessful, painting has continued to be a steadfast and lifelong pursuit for him.
Šarkauskas has held exhibitions in both Vilnius and Kaunas over the course of his career, consistently attracting the interest of attendees. His shows are seen as successful, with visitors drawn in by the unique style and vibrancy present in his art.
The artist himself openly discusses his complicated bond with painting, jokingly stating, "I tried to escape from painting, but it keeps catching up with me." This remark captures the abiding and passionate tie he has to his artistic work.
Museologist Audronė Meškauskaitė has characterized Šarkauskas’ paintings as exuberant with color, marked by bright, joyful contrasts. In her view, his clear and transparent brushstrokes impart a sense of lightness and balance, allowing the elements of his compositions to come together in an unexpectedly harmonious way.
About this artwork+
In this painting titled "Front" by Šarūnas Šarkauskas, the canvas is rich with a complex labyrinth of colors and shapes interweaving through each other. The hues range from deep blues and muted greens to vibrant oranges and subtle yellows, creating a dynamic yet harmonious interaction. The texture appears tactile, with layers of paint adding depth and a sculptural quality to the work. The composition is segmented into various panels, each telling its own story through abstract forms that suggest a blend of natural and mechanical elements. Fluid lines and curves intersect with rigid, geometric patches, reminiscent of an aerial view of a fragmented landscape or a close-up of a mechanical device. Amidst this chaos, there are moments that seem to form familiar shapes—perhaps figures or faces—briefly emerging from the abstraction before dissolving back into it. This effect challenges the viewer's perception, beckoning a closer look to unravel the mysteries hidden within the intertwined patterns. Overall, the painting evokes a sense of ongoing movement and transformation, as if each element is continuously shaping and reshaping itself, influenced by an unseen force. The choice of cool and warm colors in close proximity adds a pulsating energy, making the painting feel alive with emotion and undefined narratives.
