Salvija Zakienė, who is artistically known as Salvija ZigZak, is an artist whose creative persona is defined by opposing qualities—gentleness woven with edges, serenity disrupted by sudden flashes of inspiration. For her, creation transcends being a mere process; it is a ritual, a deeply immersive journey, and a personal conversation that unfolds with every piece she crafts.

Her approach to art is highly experimental, drawing upon a diverse range of materials, including coffee grounds, sand, acrylic paints, and ink. Rather than focusing purely on visual representation, Zakienė strives to conjure atmospheres, states of mind, and quiet vibrations in her artwork. Each piece is envisioned as a tiny universe, drawing viewers in to pause, contemplate, and discover a fleeting sense of connection with their own inner world.

By merging intuition with visual artistry, Salvija works not only with traditional paints but also unexpected elements that stimulate the senses—coffee grounds and sand add layers of texture and fragrance, while her instinctive movements allow glimpses of the subconscious to surface. At times, her creations extend past the realm of sight, echoing with internal stillness and harboring delicate secrets or messages that reveal themselves to attentive eyes.

At the heart of Salvija Zakienė’s art lies the notion of connection—whether it is with animals, nature, the feminine form, or the dynamic between light and shade. Her creations reflect both contemplation and playful spontaneity, expressing her conviction that art can offer a gentle, almost imperceptible touch—a gradual warmth that invites the viewer to experience a sensation beyond line or hue and awakens a subtle feeling within the soul.

About this artwork+

The artwork features a stylized portrait of a woman with distinct, large eyes, red lips, and an expressive gaze. Her face is adorned with delicate, symmetrical tattoos or markings. She wears a headdress or a large, elaborate hat that rests atop her black and grey hair. On her hat, a decorative cat figure, which also appears stylized and almost mask-like, sits prominently. The cat has a geometric face, colored in black, white, and grey, with attentive eyes gazing outward. The woman's attire includes a glimpse of a shoulder that sports a stripe in black and yellow, suggesting a costume or regal attire, further emphasized by an ornate round element, possibly jewelry, near her collarbone. The background is plain, accentuating the portrait and giving it a clean, focused presence.
