Born in 1987, Renata Čėplaitė is part of a new generation of contemporary Lithuanian artists. She received her education at the esteemed Vilnius Academy of Art, an institution renowned for cultivating creative talents across diverse disciplines in the visual arts. Her studies there have equipped her with a solid foundation, enabling her to establish a distinctive artistic identity within both the Lithuanian and wider European art communities.

Renata’s artistic practice is primarily concerned with the human body and the complexities inherent in body language. By observing closely, she manages to capture subtle gestures and emotional nuances, infusing her creations with a blend of vulnerability and expressiveness. Her method reveals a profound sensitivity to the intricate relationship between physical form and emotional state, inviting viewers to connect with her artworks on an intimate and intuitive level.

In her paintings, Renata relies on line as her chief means of expression. Every meticulously rendered stroke forms part of an encoded visual language—one that can only be fully comprehended with time, attentiveness, and empathy. Through this considered application of line, she not only shapes the figure but also communicates the inner experiences of her subjects, fostering a contemplative exchange between the piece and the viewer.

Her works are characterized by a subtle balance between light and shadow, which together shape the overall impact of each composition. This technique lends both definition and structure to her paintings, while maintaining a profound emotional resonance. Renata Čėplaitė’s art stands out for its sophisticated fusion of technical mastery and emotional depth, rendering each piece both aesthetically compelling and deeply affecting.

About this artwork+

The painting depicts a woman's stoic face, where large, expressive butterflies replace her eyes, giving her a mysterious and ethereal appearance. The canvas is dominated by shades of gray, setting a dramatic mood. Her lips are painted with a deep, matte lipstick that suggests a contrast between boldness and the delicate nature of the butterflies. The backdrop is ambiguous, textured softly, which emphasizes her figure further. The butterflies themselves are detailed gracefully, their wings spread wide as if they have just landed, ready to take flight again. The artwork captures a surreal and hauntingly beautiful concept, merging the natural with the surreal.
