Marius Zavadskis (born 1979) is an artist whose body of work revolves around myths and their deep significance within human culture. To Zavadskis, myths function as reflections of essential values and the enduring questions that shape human life. Through his artistic practice, he investigates themes of universal importance, such as the beginnings of humanity, the human role in the world, and the journey and meaning of existence. He frequently expresses these ideas through motifs that, while familiar, maintain their relevance through the ages.

From the time he was a student, Zavadskis has felt a strong attraction to biblical stories. By repeatedly engaging with these themes, he is able to explore topics that have preoccupied human minds for generations. His reinterpretations and references to well-known biblical imagery invite viewers to reflect on the ways ancient narratives continue to resonate with modern experiences and existential questions.

In 2003, Zavadskis earned his degree in sculpture from the Vilnius Academy of Arts, completing his formal education. This academic training provided the technical foundation and conceptual insights required for his professional development as an artist. His background in sculpture is further enhanced by his work as an illustrator, granting him the flexibility to convey his ideas through a range of forms and techniques.

In creating his chamber sculptures, Marius Zavadskis generally favors traditional materials and subjects, emphasizing his respect for both heritage and skilled craftsmanship. The deliberate choice of materials helps highlight the enduring qualities of the narratives he presents, reinforcing connections between myth and reality, past and present. Through his combined work in sculpture and illustration, he persistently invites audiences into a thoughtful conversation with humanity’s perennial stories and questions.

About this artwork+

This sculpture is quite charming! It shows a small child standing on a base, looking upwards with what seems to be a delightful expression. The child is wearing a dress and has two pigtails that stick out playfully. The features are exaggerated and stylized, with big eyes and a round face. In terms of style, the use of a smooth, metallic finish adds a touch of fantasy and glamour, fitting well with the title "I am a Princess." This could symbolize dreams or aspirations seen through the innocent eyes of a child. Marius Zavadskis might have used this approach to blend realism with a bit of whimsy, giving the statue a fairy tale-like quality. The choice of material and the polished finish make it stand out, elevating the ordinary to something precious and eye-catching.
