Andrius Makarevičius, born on October 13, 1982, in Pabrade, is a Lithuanian artist acclaimed for his dynamic and intellectually engaging creations. In 2005, he graduated from Vilnius Pedagogical University with a Bachelor of Arts, providing him with a strong academic basis for his artistic pursuit.

Since 2003, Makarevičius has presented his art in personal exhibitions and has remained an active participant in numerous group shows and collaborative endeavors. His involvement in Lithuania's art community was further affirmed in 2017, when he joined the Lithuanian Artists' Union.

Makarevičius’ work is distinguished by its direct engagement with difficult and sometimes uncomfortable issues. His paintings are characterized by bold, textured brushwork, altered proportions, and an intricate play of unconventional colors. The human figures he portrays frequently merge with animalistic traits, evoking a surreal interpretation of everyday existence. Despite the often serious subject matter, Makarevičius incorporates humor and irony, preserving a lively and broad-minded perspective. Central to his artistic vision is an exploration of human nature, delving into the tensions between internal and external realities, and examining humanity’s interactions with itself and its surroundings.

Makarevičius’ artworks have gained admiration from collectors and art lovers both within Lithuania and abroad, and are represented in private collections in countries such as America, Switzerland, England, Ireland, Denmark, and Germany. Of particular note, one private collector with a keen interest in nudes has acquired ten of his paintings, further reflecting the artist's wide-ranging appeal.

About this artwork+

The painting depicts a somber-looking man, captured from the waist up. He wears a nonchalant expression, with slightly furrowed brows and lips that curl into a subtle frown. His face is painted with bold, expressive strokes of yellow, light blue, and purple, giving it a rugged, almost weathered look. He is donned in a dark, wide-collared jacket sprinkled with tiny specks of bright colors as if reflecting a hint of distant lights or a starry night. Underneath the jacket, he wears a horizontally striped shirt, white and navy, peeking out around his neck area. His head is topped with a dark blue hat that sits snugly. In his right hand, which comes across as more defined against the vibrant background, he holds a few smoking cigarettes between his fingers, suggesting a moment of deep thought or a break in solitude. Behind him, there's a fence that stretches across the canvas, simple yet pronounced with its black vertical bars topped with golden orbs, contrasting against a vivid, mustard-yellow background that fills the scene with an intense, almost tangible warmth. This stark background enhances the subject's features and the overall melancholic yet bold atmosphere of the artwork.
