Aistė Jurgilaitė is a contemporary artist who works primarily with painting, favoring acrylics applied to canvas stretched over a wooden frame. She notes that acrylic paint suits the rhythm and temperament of her creative process: it dries swiftly, holds onto texture, preserves vibrancy, and accommodates both translucent and opaque layers. This flexibility allows her to investigate a broad spectrum of moods and atmospheres throughout her art.

Color is at the heart of Jurgilaitė’s creative approach. She is captivated by the expressive possibilities that colors offer—their vividness or softness, their ability to elicit calm or unrest, and the dynamic balance between light and shadow. By skillfully handling color, Jurgilaitė strives to express intricate emotions and depict the myriad ways the world may be experienced, employing paint as an instrument for both technique and spirit.

Although her paintings are abstract, they frequently suggest recognizable forms whose outlines dissolve into abstraction, alluding to a reality that is fleeting. This method, for Jurgilaitė, reflects the impermanence and delicacy of life, as well as our link to an infinite, ageless existence. Personal imagery intertwines with existential questions, with calligraphic elements emerging from the depths of color—silent markers of human consciousness and soul—prompting viewers to see their own experiences reflected even as the mystery of the canvas remains intact.

The foundation of Jurgilaitė’s work lies in harmony and light. Whether she portrays scenes from nature, moments of human connection, or pure abstractions, she imbues each with a sense of wonder, gentle illumination, and shifting, colorful impressions of reality. Through her art, she inspires others to foster inner light, remain mindful through life’s challenges, and seek balance in all things. Jurgilaitė’s paintings have found acclaim in Lithuania as well as in France, and she has taken part in numerous renowned exhibitions and biennials.

About this artwork+

In this evocative painting, the canvas is suffused with a blend of warm amber, soothing oranges, and subtle greys, creating an almost dream-like atmosphere. The composition seemingly depicts a figure, abstract and softly contoured, which dominates the foreground, conveying movement or transformation. This figure is primarily painted in a bright white, suggesting ethereality or purity, with strokes that appear dynamic, almost fleeting. The interplay of light and shadow lends a delicate depth to the piece. A stark contrast is introduced with a singular, vividly red flower held in what might be perceived as the figure's hand, drawing the viewer's eye with its splash of color against the muted background hues. Hints of textural elements and linear forms in the backdrop, possibly evocative of urban structures or script, intersperse the soothing backdrop with a touch of structured chaos. Overall, the painting captures a moment that feels both transient and poignant, encapsulated within an ethereal, dream-like quality that invites contemplation and emotional reflection.
