Agota Bričkutė, born in 1993 in Klaipėda, Lithuania, is a contemporary painter belonging to the younger generation of Lithuanian artists. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Criticism, and Media from Vytautas Magnus University in 2016. Since beginning to paint actively in 2017, Agota has developed a promising career, taking part in over 15 solo and group exhibitions. Her artworks have been included in private collections both within Lithuania and abroad.

Intuition plays a vital role in Agota Bričkutė's creative process, as she allows her subconscious to lead her artistic direction. This method closely corresponds to the surrealist principle of automatism, in which spontaneous impulses and visions influence the evolution of her works. As she paints, these impressions are transformed into allegorical and symbolic stories, inviting audiences to unearth the layers of meaning present in each piece. Her color choices are bold and decorative, employing a vivid palette that stands in stark contrast to the often intricate and paradoxical motifs underneath.

Agota Bričkutė’s art explores the interconnectedness between humans and nature as its main theme. Instead of depicting conventional landscapes, she reimagines elements of the natural world as emotionally charged dreamscapes, where humanity and the environment are locked in a constant, spirited exchange. This approach allows her paintings to mirror personal experience, probing various psychological moods and emotional reactions.

Utilizing a liberated, associative visual language, Agota Bričkutė welcomes viewers into her fantastical realm, nurturing a connection that is both intellectual and emotional. Her expressive style and symbolism enable her to investigate her internal world, while also providing the audience space to contemplate their own interpretations and emotions. Through her art, Agota establishes a conversation between artist and viewer, uniting private introspection with broader, universal themes.

"Long familiar does not in any way mean unsurprising or uninteresting. Although, without a doubt, A. Bričkutė’s work is imbued with the recognizable composition, proportions, and mood characteristic of Surrealism, it also reveals a relationship between Munchian Symbolism and the use of color and the natural landscape.

The artist’s expression is authentic: stylized depictions, most often of nature, are created through contrasts of vivid (sometimes even psychedelic) and dark or pastel, monochromatic colors, with (but not necessarily) anthropomorphic details. Dark and light, vivid and muted, light and shadow—these are inseparable duos in the painter’s work. Both landscapes and portraits (or implied representations of people) are united by a shared sense of the artist’s world and her relationship to it: the images are dreamlike, mysterious, and magical, yet even disproportionate faces or other mystical creatures do not evoke fear. On the contrary, there is a persistent feeling that we have already met them, interacted with them, seen them, and dreamed of them." - Ugnė Brazytė

About this artwork+

The painting depicts a female figure, portrayed with a stark and intense expression. The face is rendered asymmetrical, with one eye slightly elevated compared to the other, which gives a striking detail. Her eyes are highlighted by reddish-pink hues that seem to intensify her gaze. The skin is painted with a blend of gray and flushed pink tones, conveying a feeling of both pallor and vitality. Her lips are accented with a muted pink, matching the subtler tones around her eyes. Her hair is yellow, with darker shadows adding depth and contrast, falling over her shoulders in a somewhat unkempt style. Her attire seems to be a collared shirt or jacket, detailed with shades of grays and soft reds, with a glimpse of a red undergarment. The background is plain, directing all focus onto her. The overall painting exudes a raw and emotive energy, capturing a complex internal state through vibrant colors and expressive lines.
